Urban Strata
Urban Strata is a multifamily residential development located in the hills outside of Austin, Texas. The project consists of 126 residential units with a variety of common spaces such as a gym, business center, dog park, and rooftop patio. The central courtyard contains lavishly landscaped outdoor spaces with a private pool deck, grill area, firepit, and outdoor seating nooks. Urban Strata is one of the many components of the large mix-use PUD where pedestrian access is encouraged by several connectors. Strategically placed parking garages allow the development to be surrounded by nature.
For the main source of inspiration for the design, the Mirador team looked at the Austin geography and the natural landscape for inspiration. This included the Balcones Escarpment, regional vegetation such as succulents, and the layered strata found around the Austin hills.
Sustainability and passive solar methods were also considered in the design. The organization of the units around a large courtyard allowed more solar gain in the units during the wintertime to naturally heat the spaces and overhangs create thoughtful shadows during the summer. Sunshades and recessed balconies were strategically placed to help with the cooling of the building. Natural light is provided throughout the building, creating a connection with the outdoors and nature.
The selection of exterior materials and design of construction details were carefully considered to blend and create a timeless low maintenance luxurious design while connecting to the distinct Austin design language. The use of green elements such as planter boxes and elevated gardens was introduced to create a connection with nature on all floors. Urbana Strata is a beautiful multifamily design that was born from the surrounding terrain.
